Farlessattentionhasbeendevotedtoparents’andchildren’scognitiveprocessingofdifferentdisciplinestrategiesandhowcognitionaboutdiscplinemayaffectthelinkbetweenparents’useofparticulardisciplinestrategiesandchildren’sadjustment.Thisstudyexaminedcognitivemechanismslinkingparents’disciplinewithchildren’sadjustmentin10countries.Interviewswereconductedwith7-to9-year-oldchildren(51 girls),theirmothers,andfathersinChina,Colombia,India,Italy,Jordan,Kenya,Philippines,Sweden,Thailand,andtheUnitedStates.Childrenandparentsreportedhowfrequentlyparentsusedeachof18disciplinestrategies,howmuchtheyapprovedofparentsusingeachofthedisciplinestrategies,andtowhatextenttheybelievedthatusingeachdisciplinestrategywouldgetchildrentodowhattheyaresupposedtobedoing.Children,
mothers,andfathersreportedonchildren’sadjustment.Thereweredifferencesacrosscountriesinthefrequencywithwhichparentsuseddifferentformsofdisciplineandparents’and
children’scognitivappraisalsofdifferentdisciplinestrategies.
