Rapid naming speed: What does it predict, when and how
Rapid automatized naming, defined as the ability to name as fast as possible visually presented familiar symbols such as digits, letters (characters), colors, and objects is one of the best predictors of reading across languages (see Kirby, Georgiou, Martinussen, & Parrila, 2010, Wolf & Bowers, 1999, for reviews). In this presentation I will present evidence on the predictive value of rapid naming, the time when it is more predictive of reading, and the mechanism that is responsible for the rapid naming-reading relationship. Importantly, I will present evidence from two studies I conducted with colleagues in Chinese (Mandarin-speaking children).
