Neural delays, moving objects and flash-lag
报告摘要:There are non-trivial delays in the transmission of neural signals from the retina to the higher centers of the brain, and in the communication of “central commands” to the muscles via descending pathways. These delays must be compensated if the animal is to interact with the environment effectively. This is particularly so in dynamic situations such as interception of moving objects. That some of the delays are compensated within the motor system is well established. My research has to do with whether, and how, the human and animal nervous systems compensate for the delays within the vision pathways. In particular, I am interested in understanding how the brain might exploit the temporal pattern in the changing visual input (e.g. motion), and from it ‘predict’ the likely current, as opposed to delayed, state of the input. These issues will be considered in the context of the visual phenomenon known as the flash-lag effect in which a moving object arriving at a given spatial position, the moment a flashed object is presented at the same position, is seen in a position leading the flashed object.
