内容介绍:
Family life does not only provide a setting for its genetically related members to cooperate for mutually beneficial evolutionary goals but also sets the stage for intense conflicts both between parents and offspring and among the offspring. This talk presents an evolutionary explanation of family conflict that is derived from three major theories, namely, Hamilton’s inclusive fitness theory, Trivers’ parent-offspring conflict theory, and recent work by David Haig on genomic imprinting. Within these frameworks I present evidence from across species on parent-child conflict, sibling conflict, and the conflict between the parents. This evidence highlights the evolutionary view that family conflicts are not temporary perturbations due to certain proximate causes but are rather inherited from the very functioning of the family as a cooperating arrangement that, however, serves each member’s own selfish interest.
