讲座题目:Towards a Model of  Tonal Processing During Mandarin Chinese Spoken Word Recognition

内容摘要:Despite its status as  the language with the highest number of native speakers in the world, little is  known about how spoken words are recognized in Mandarin Chinese. Specifically,  relatively few studies have looked at how tonal information is processed in the  brains of Mandarin speakers. To this end, we have used time-sensitive measures  like eyetracking and event related potentials (ERPs) to investigate access to  tonal information compared to consonants and vowels (i.e., phonemic information)  during Mandarin spoken word recognition. Results from these studies have shown  that tones are processed at the same time as phonemes and in a similar fashion,  but that distinct brain areas might be involved in processing these two types of  information. In this talk, I will present a proposed model of Mandarin spoken  word recognition that incorporates these findings. This work has implications  for current models of spoken word recognition, which to date have not included  tone.
