Abstract: Large-scale international studies that compare educational systems usually focus on achievement outcomes, primarily in mathematics and science. In this presentation I want to give an overview what other questions that are relevant for school improvement or educational research, these studies can be addressed with this type of data. Two illustrative examples from TIMSS and PISA will be presented to demonstrate that these data sets are particularly easy to use.Kai Cortina is Associate Professor of Psychology and of the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan. He received his Ph.D. from the Free University in Berlin in 1996, and his Habilitation from the Free University in Berlin in 2004. His research revolves around the following topics: • Students' learning motivation and psychosocial development;• Analyzing and evaluating teaching practice using advanced technology (e.g. mobile eye-tracking);• Multivariate Statistics and Longitudinal Design;• The U.S. and German school system in international comparison.
